Calhoun County Historical Courthouse Post Hurricane Michael Renovations, Altha, Florida
Madrid CPWG worked with Calhoun County to rebuild the County’s historical courthouse building. The building had been damaged by Hurricane Michael in 2018. The construction project was funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.
The project began with a complete visual and physical assessment of the damaged historic structure. The examination included a LiDar survey and scan to assess damage not readily visible and to create a 3D model of the courthouse. Drones were used to provide aerial reconnaissance of the roof and field measurements of the site. The team also conducted brick masonry structural integrity testing and color matching.
The restoration and rehabilitation planning were coordinated with the State of Florida Department of State, Divisions of Historical Resources, and Bureau of Historic Preservation. The team conducted a Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA) compliance review and coordinated the process management with acceptance by the State Historic Preservation Officer (“SHPO”), Dr. Timothy Parsons. Historic American Building Survey quality AutoCAD drawings for existing condition, and restoration drawings were required to provide direction for a Mason to repair to like new conditions.
When developing the plan, the team considered the relative value of alternative replacement materials, building systems and equipment, together with other aesthetic considerations. The team assessed the client and building owner’s schedule and budget for the cost of the required repairs.
The approved reconstruction drawings, included floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, interior and exterior elevations, chimney sections, reinforcing details, flashing and waterproofing details, and material schedules. Applicable permits were applied for and approved. Our team assisted the County with bidding the project and negotiating with the selected contractor. The final project included repair or replacement of 4 chimneys, repair of the interior water damage, and repair and restoration of the roof, roofing, flashing, eave, fascia, and soffits.
